The Grouse Grind Mountain Run is a gruelling 2.9km trail race up the face of Grouse Mountain. With an elevation gain of 853m, this really is a true test of your fitness. After all, the trail is affectionately known as ‘Nature’s Stairmaster’.
It’s been quite a while since I’ve hiked up the Grouse Grind. On a run out that way, I would typically take the BCMC which runs parallel to the Grouse Grind. Although this trail is about 600m longer, it has a little more scenery, a lot fewer people and takes about the same amount of time to climb. As you get towards the top, it becomes a little easier.
The Grouse Grind Mountain Run is not an event I’ve ever bothered with before. I’ve run Seek the Peak a couple of times, which starts down at sea level in West Vancouver and takes in the Grind at the end, but I’ve never actually participated in the actual Grouse Grind race. However, I received an email yesterday offering entry for Grouse Mountain annual pass holders at just $9! The early-bird pricing is $25, so that’s a deal I just wasn’t going to say no to! Plus, the Whistler Alpine Meadows 55k is coming up the following weekend, so this will be a great opportunity to get some final, hard climbing in before the big day.
I can’t really remember what my best time up the Grouse Grind is, but I’ll be happy with something in the 40-minute range from this race.
